Long Time, No Blog
Hey guys! So I haven’t blogged in awhile – here is a photo of ponies in sweaters to make up for that:
But I do have a few excuses — for one, I’ve submitted my PhD thesis/dissertation – which means all I have left to do is fly to Manchester, have a practice viva, have a real viva, probably do some revisions, resubmit and bind everything, and THEN I can be a doctor finally. Dr. Guinness!
(no, not like that)
Oh, and then there were awesome holiday-fun times (I’ll have several recap posts on all the merriment and such) and then this happened:
Well, that might be a dramatic recreation (a recreation of the drama of MY PAIN) – but considering how not even a clean room specialist off in California could do anything for it, I might as well have set my hard drive on fire. At least then I would have…… been warm for a second? What happened is this: while back in the states for Christmas my computer froze up and then refused to turn back on. The apple store couldn’t save my hard drive, neither could the hard drive specialists I took it to in Milford, OH. Then I mailed it off to CA, and nope – nothing from them, either (and they can usually fix hard drives that have *actually* been set on fire). Of course, this was not fun because (a) I was pretty much finished with the first complete draft of my dissertation and (b) despite seeing the little time machine “you have not backed up in 367……368…..458 days” pretty much every day for the past 458 days of my life, I never actually backed anything up. SO DUMB! I KNOW! So not only did I lose my work, I had a lot of work to lose. Anyway, long story short, see above, the darn dissertation got turned in anyway. I win!
Ok, to dip the toe back in the bloggy pool, I will now tell you about my Valentine’s day. It was fun. I got cupcakes and some roses. (Oh come on, if I can’t be stereotypically lovey-dovey and sickening about newlywed Valentine’s stuff, then when can I be?) If the saccharine gives you some emotional diabetes, go read this, about my last Valentine’s. Better? Good. Now what I did this year:
Picnic! I decided to surprise Grant with a picnic – there is this awesome company here in Wellington called Picnic Daze – and they basically pack up a delicious gourmet lunch in a cute vintage picnic basket for you. It was delicious and scenic, and there was very little work on my part.
We couldn’t really find a flat spot for the picnic, so we had to make due in the middle of lots of tall grass and bumpy ground, but the view more than made up for it:
So, on the menu was:
Salmon pate with wasabi roe and sea-salt crostini
Chicken roll stuffed with wild herbs and wrapped in pancetta
Carrot and Kalamata olives salad
Liquored strawberry and mint salad
A champagne jelly bavouir with summer berries
Strawberry sweetheart biscuits
a lot of the picnic got eaten before we took photos, but it was all amazingly delicious.
and we made some bears (don’t ask)
